JULY 26

Greeting from the Director

Personal congratulations to all those elected to the Olivedale Board. I look forward to working with each of you.

I am so pleased with the results of the "Second Tuesday Lunch." June doubled the number served in May making it quite successful with the dining area humming with visiting chatter. Hamburgers on the grill smelled so good and some were stacked pretty high with all the trimmings! Check out July’s menu – we’re using the grill again.

The art talent within this membership is very impressive as evidenced during the art show in May. You all have so much to share and it was delightful to have the Center filled with your creations. What other ways can we show off members' gifts and skills?

It sure got hot in a hurry this year. Be careful and use precautions while working out-of-doors and stay hydrated! Baby blue birds are hatching at Olivedale and the squirrels are still racing up and down the Big Oak. Life is good!

Beginning September 26 and ending May 8, 2005, these performances are matinees called the "Sunday Treats." Our 18-seater bus will leave Olivedale at noon with plenty of time to enjoy a lunch stop (on your own) and get to the 3:00 show. We will offer the entire seven concert package for $95.00 to those wanting the entire series and, if any remain, will sell individual shows later in the season. For the complete description of the performances, stop by the office.

If you are considering taking an aquatic class and have been inactive for a while, please contact Stacey prior to your first class. The class is free, but advance registration is required by July 9 to ensure that we have enough goodies for all who come.

Director Forms Focus Group

The Olivedale Director is developing a focus group to be formed from a combination of individuals. The objective will be to meet and discuss the past and present Olivedale, how the needs of members have changed, and possibilities for the Center to stay up-to-date and prepare for the needs of current and future generations.

Individuals wanted:

  • Women and men, married, single and widowed
  • Some from each age group: 55-67, 68-79, 80+
  • Various levels of activity participation (past & present)
  • Some members for over 20 years
  • Members for 10-19 years
  • Members for 5-9 years
  • Members under 5 years
  • Diversified group representing various work and educational backgrounds

Desired group size is 20. All background information will be taken by the director for pertinent group variety and kept confidential.

If you think you could contribute to such a group, and would like to work with the Center Director looking into Olivedale's promising future, call or write the Director, Martha Maul.

Plans are to have group formed and first meeting by late August. Please consider joining us; your insights would be appreciated.

Got Recipes…?
Among other positive beliefs, seniors are thought of as possessing that forgotten art of cooking and baking. It’s time for another Olivedale Cookbook – it has been five years. We will begin collecting recipes in August. In the meantime, please sort through your recipe box and consider sharing some of your favorites. We will make this collection a bit different.

We will want to know from where or whom the recipe came (e.g., my favorite aunt ), when you enjoy it, etc. We will have all those details in August. We are also looking for a name or "catch phrase" for the title of the book.
