Monthly Newsletter of Olivedale Senior Center

Olivedale's First Monthly
Lunch  A Hit!

Mama Mia! Our first monthly lunch was great— we're sorry if you missed it. An Italian menu was served cafeteria style between 11:30a—12:30p. The line moved quickly and soon friendly chatter was replaced with quiet appreciation of a meal well-prepared by the crew of Olivedale volunteers. Everyone who stopped to chat was impressed with quality and quantity of the food. One lunch group stated that everything was "Just right!"

Red Glad Hatters
The ladies enjoyed their outing to River Valley Mall and Barnes & Noble at Easton Town Center this past month where they met Sue Ellen Cooper, founder of the Red Hatters, at her book signing. Dinner was enjoyed at Brio Tuscan Grille. The Olivedale Red Glad Hatters will join other Red Hatters for a tea party June 19, 2:30p at Annie’s Tea Room, downtown Lancaster. Call for your reservation, 654-3692. We will be in the Lancaster Fourth of July parade. Please meet at the Fairgrounds at 8:00a, July 3, of course in your purple with red hat!

It's All About Health
SHINGLES—What's It All About?

I cannot recall how many times in my practice that I would see patients with localized pain in their scalp, abdomen, chest or legs who three to four days later erupted in a blister like rash of Shingles (Herpes Zoster). It was particularly more prevalent in older patients.

You’ve had to have had the Chickenpox (Varicella) in order to have Shingles later in life. The Varicella virus survives and resides in some of the dorsal nerve roots along the spinal cord. When there is some sort of stress or change in the immune system the virus travels down the nerve to the skin causing a painful blister like rash that takes about 14-21 days to clear up.

After the rash clears the pain often persists for long periods of time and can be quite severe requiring narcotics for relief. Treatment with antiviral agents and steroids often times is quite effective in preventing this neuralgic pain.

Occasionally the pain is unaccompanied by any rash or just one or two pox which proves later to be Shingles. A convalescent serum test showing a rise in antibody level can prove this after the illness begins. Shingles can mimic heart, gallbladder or kidney disease. 20% of the population get Shingles in their lifetime and 5% of the population may have more than one bout of Shingles half the time in the same region.

Patients with Shingles can transmit the Varicella virus to people without immunity to the virus to produce Chickenpox. Since the Chickenpox vaccine is an attenuated live virus one would surmise Shingles might still occur later in life even though you neve
r had a diagnosed case of Chickenpox.
