"SWING
ODYSSEY" Performs for Olivedale |
| When
the Oliveaires retired after twenty plus years of
providing music at Olivedale, Nick Delmatto approached
Helen Hodsden about filling the void. Swing Odyssey was
formed and began playing in January 2001. Dedicated to
performing at Olivedale every month, typically the
second Saturdays, this small combo plays swing music
alternating sets with the String Band.
Current Swing Odyssey
members include Nick Delmatto, tenor and soprano
saxophone. Nick performs with the Nostalgics big band
here at the center also. Helen Hodsden plays |
piano
and shares leader-of-the-band duties with Nick. Helen is
also a member of the Olivedale Kitchen Band. Debbie Beam
is the group’s female vocalist. Larry Leach plays bass
and Pat Henry is drummer. All are members of Olivedale
except Debbie, only because she is not old enough (yet).
Each is active in other musical groups, work or
community involvement. Two original members, Jack
Coleman (bass) and Ellie Delmatto (singer) are no longer
with the group. If you like easy listening and swing
dance music, come to the dance and enjoy the Swing
Odyssey. We thank them for their dedication to Olivedale. |

| Greeting
from the Director |
|
The
sun is casting long shadows already —will someone tell
me where the summer went? This seems to be the topic of
many conversations here at Olivedale. Time really does
seem to fly. I look forward to fall and winter though;
and living in Ohio truly gives us four distinct
seasons.
Many of our members will be at the Fairfield County Fair
performing—hope you can enjoy the fair also. It’s
hard to believe this is the 154th fair. And you thought
you were old!
Olivedale is swinging to the fifties this month. If you
have pictures of yourself, other notables, landmarks,
etc., from the fif- ties, we would like to scan them and
return your original to you on the spot and display the
copy this month. Any items (bikes, motorcycles, shoes,
juke boxes, dolls, etc) you would like to display for a
couple of weeks would help decorate the Center. This
will culminate with our Fifties Dinner/Dance October 22.
Call and let us know.
Squirrels are squirreling away the nuts, greens are
turning to browns, daylight is shorter and “an ending”
is sensed. Some people lose spirit as summer passes.
Keep busy, call a friend and do something for someone
else for a kick.

newsletters, prepare food, serve food, wash dishes, have fun,
decorate, instruct classes, perform at dances, plant and weed
gardens and have fun.
We have a
wonderful bunch of volunteers. If you would like to see where you
are needed, call Ruth Starner, Volunteer Coordinator, at Olivedale.
